As a reader-writer the goals for this reviewer are to give an honest opinion of what's been read - in order to help other readers decide whether or not to purchase a book, and a considerate critique - in order to give the writer feedback on what does and does not work (for this particular reader) as well as point out any grammar or spelling errors. With that said, Emily Kimelman's "The Devil's Breath" is book number five in her character Sydney Rye's mysteries, but my first to read. This reader does not recall any glaring spelling or grammar issues in the story. This reader also, unfortunately, didn't really care for the protagonist, at all.Perhaps faithful followers of the series find Sydney a likable - or at least, someone to empathize with - character, but this reader did not. Which meant some of the chapters were slightly tedious to get through. Kimelman's description's were decent enough to allow this reader to picture Sydney; I simply didn't care about her nor understand why all the men in her life are completely ga-ga over her. She's rude, sarcastic and emotionally distant. Perhaps the first four books set up all of these character traits adequately, but for someone new to the series, it left a huge distaste for this protagonist in me. However, I loved her dog Blue, and is likely the main reason I originally downloaded the book. I wish he was used more; it would have been nice to see how Sydney truly felt about her dog instead of only being hinted at. This reader found it highly unlikely a dog described to be wolf-like in appearance was allowed entry into every place Sydney ventured into, so that kept tossing me out of the world Kimelman created. The antagonist Bobby Maxim was an interesting character to this reader, although he was part of the tediousness of the book as Sydney agonized over whether or not he was a good or bad guy.
The drug used in this story was interesting and not one this reader had read about before. The start of the plot, Sydney's friend Hugh being accused of murder and the possibility of datura causing this murder, was intriguing. However, instead of moving this plot forward, Kimelman chose to veer off and present Sydney's tangled relationship's with the three men claiming to be in love with her for the greatest portion of the book; this is what made it a tedious read and showed this reader that Kimelman's books are not stand alone stories but should be read in order, apparently. Yet, this reader found the protagonist so distasteful, I won't bother with the beginning books or recommend this book.

THE DEVIL'S BREATH A Sydney Rye Mystery #5 The Sydney Rye Series eBook Emily Kimelman Reviews
I have become a huge Emily Kimelman fan and look forward to her next Sydney Rye installment. As I have written in other reviews of books in this series, the heroine is tough and fragile, committed and conflicted, shaped by her own basic character and horrific experiences, always teetering on the edge of being the worst version of herself while she battles injustice for the best reasons. She seeks love but cannot allow it, wants challenge and at the same time wants to flee from it, can't decide who she is or who she can be, and seems destined to float along to wherever the rip tides take her while pining for a rest she cannot tolerate for long. I like that her adventures take Sidney to exotic locales and give us a glimpse into the underbelly of those places we would never see otherwise, but I pull back in horror when she does. This one in particular was hard to read in some places and I wanted to put it aside and not look at the terrible things human beings can do to one another. But there was really no place in the plot to take a breath of fresh air before plunging in again. Fast paced, mostly unpredictable and gripping. A real page turner. Besides, how could you not love a strong woman warrior with such a great canine companion. The dog Blue is a stroke of genius on the part of the author. Looking forward to the next volume in this series.
Kimelman is growing as a writer. This is the 3rd Sidney Rye I've read, and I appreciate the plot development and the strong characters in this novel. I hate it that she has two men I like both in love with her. I can't decide which one I hope she ends up with. I suspect it may not be either one since both men have agreed to stay away from her sexually. I am not crazy about her falling into lust with so many men so quickly. She almost got the hots for Robert. He's a bit slimy. I could not predict how this novel would turn out, which was good. It also bothered me that she is reckless to the point of crazy. Way too much pride! However, she seems to finally realize she needs her friends as much as they need her. I will read the next in the series.
Trouble seems to find Sydney no matter where in the world she goes. She can't stand by and not do anything. This time it brings her back home stateside. When a close family friend gets caught up in some kind of scheme, Sydney is determined to do whatever it takes to save him and clear his name.
This series just keeps getting better and better. I didn't want to put it down and actually found myself somewhat antsy because I wanted to get back to the book and keep turning that page to find out what was gonna happen next. Can't wait to see what Sydney goes up against next.

I have read several of the books in Emily Kimelman's Sydney Rye series. The addition of her huge dog sets it apart from other series with strong women protagonists. The first I read about Sydney Rye was in a book by Renee Pawlish, Walk Softly Danger, as part of a World Launch. Pawlish is one of my favorite authors, and since her novels don't contain excessive sex or violence I enjoyed that novella. I wanted to read more about Sydney and how she got to that point. I received this as a free download. The stories take place all around the world with Sydney attempting to achieve justice where the law has been unable or bribed not to.
The books are all very well written. The characters seem real, but little is revealed about the main characters with different minor characters in each book. Sydney is extremely strong physically, and does not hesitate to kill when she feels it necessary. The stories keep me engaged, usually with surprising villains revealed. I recommend this series to people who enjoy this genre. It seems to me each book just continues with a platform for sex and violence, but they have satisfying endings that lead you to the next installment. I prefer less violence. I would compare this series to the Jet series by Russell Blake.
